Wasserstoffbildende Enzyme aktivieren: Gibt man eine inaktive Vorstufe der Hydrogenase (ein Ausschnitt des Zentrums oben links) mit dem inaktiven chemisch synthetisierten Ko-Faktor (oben rechts) zusammen, integriert die Hydrogenase die synthetische Komponente von selbst. Es bilden sich Hydrogenasen (unten), die von den natürlichen Enzymen nicht zu unterscheiden sind. Das komplexe Zentrum dieser Enzyme (unten mittig), in das der Ko-Faktor integriert wird, katalysiert sehr effizient die Bildung von Wasserstoff.
