Kontaktstellen zwischen Nervenzellen (rot) werden zum Teil von bestimmten Zellen, den Astrozyten (grün) umschlossen. Wissenschaftler zeigten nun, dass Nervenzelle und Astrozyt sich über die Moleküle EphrinA3 und EphA4 austauschen und der Astrozyt so die Kommunikation zwischen zwei Nervenzellen beeinflusst, indem der Botenstoff Glutamat entfernt. Diese bisher unbekannte Funktion dieser sternförmigen Zellen wirkt sich auf die Fähigkeit des Gehirns aus zu lernen.
