Um den Transport potenzieller pharmazeutischer Wirkstoffe durch Membranproteine in Echtzeit beobachten zu können, werden die Testsubstanzen mit fluorenszierenden Markern versehen. Ihr Weg lässt sich durch Akkumulation in beziehungsweise Freisetzung aus den Mikrokompartimenten auf dem Chip verfolgen. Jede Nanopore ist dabei individuell mit einem dieser Mikrokompartimente verbunden, so dass auf einem Chip tausende von verschiedenen Wirkstoffen getestet werden können.
