Niedrigfliegende Satelliten (Low Earth Orbit = LEO) in 500 bis 600 km Höhe bilden die Basis der LEO-LEO Mikrowellen-Okkultation (LMO) und Infrarotlaser-Okkultation (LIO): Mikrowellen- und Infrarotlaser-Signale durchqueren die Atmosphäre und werden dabei von Brechung und Absorption beeinflusst. Daraus lassen sich vertikale Profile von Treibhausgasen und anderen Klimavariablen wie Temperatur und Wind ableiten.
