Mit Viren infizierte dendritische Zellen liefern das erste Aktivierungssignal für Killer T-Zellen über deren T-Zell-Rezeptor. Neu ist, daß auch mit Viren infizierte sterbende Körperzellen Killer T-Zellen alarmieren. Die durch die Virusinfektion sterbenden Körperzellen setzen das Alarmin Interleukin 33 frei. Dieses zweite Signal führt zur vollen Aktivierung der Killer T-Zellen. Sie vermehren sich nun sehr stark und töten wirksam die mit Viren infizierten Zellen ab.
