Die Abbildung zeigt fluoreszenzmarkierte Riechnervenzellen (grün) in einem Dünnschnitt aus der Nasenschleimhaut der Maus. Die Fortsätze der Riechnervenzellen enden am Übergang zur Nasenhöhle (schwarz) mit fadenförmigen Ausläufern (sog. Zilien), die die Riechschleimhaut bedecken. In roter Farbe sind durch Antikörper markierte und gefärbte Mitochondrien dargestellt, die in allen Zellen der Nasenschleimhaut vorkommen. Oben schematisch dargestellt sind die elektrischen Entladungen einer repräsentativen Riechnervenzelle bei Duftwahrnehmung. Ist die Aufnahme von Kalzium in die Mitochondrien durch den mCU-Kanal (mCU = „mitochondrial calcium uniporter“) möglich, so reagiert die Riechnervenzelle auf den Duft. Wird Aufnahme von Kalzium blockiert, findet keine Duftantwort statt.
