Die Grafik zeigt oben einen Ausschnitt aus einem Diblockcopolymer. Die Kette links (blau) leitet Löcher, die Kette rechts (rot) leitet Elektronen. Derart strukturierte Kunststoffmoleküle sind Bausteine für polymere Halbleiter mit parallel verlaufenden, eng benachbarten Transportbahnen für die gegensätzlichen Ladungen. Von der Anzahl der sich wiederholenden Molekülenheiten und somit von der Länge der ladungsleitenden Ketten (chemisch gesprochen: von der Volumenfraktion) hängt es ab, wie die Nanostrukturierung der Halbleiter aussieht. Als besonders vielversprechend gelten in der Forschung lamellare und zylindrische Nanostrukturen, wie sie unten links bzw. unten rechts dargestellt sind.
