Die schematische Abbildung zeigt den Prozessschritt der Bildung des roten Blutfarbstoffs Häm aus dem fluoreszierenden Vorprodukt Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Durch Hemmung des verantwortlichen Enzyms Ferrochelatase (FECH) reichert sich PpIX in den Tumorzellen an. Durch das neu entwickelte Messverfahren können die Krebszellen mithilfe einer Spezialkamera sichtbar gemacht werden - hier gezeigt am Beispiel von menschlichen Karzinomzellen, die in eine Maus eingebracht wurden.
