Invitation European College of Liberal Arts Berlin - State of the World Week on Water

Fiona Schnüttgen Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
European College of Liberal Arts gGmbH

A forum for inquiry into current affairs, the State of the World Week at ECLA (SWWE) fulfils an integral part of ECLA's educational mission by demonstrating the relevance of liberal arts studies to contemporary world events. This year, the topic will be Water - the topic of the year 2008 of the UN-decade Education for Sustainable Development. The SWWE 2008 will take place on 5-9 May 2008.

The SWWE 2008 is built on a set of morning lectures by international speakers: geographer Tony Allan (King's College, UK), Alternative Nobel Winner Maude Barlow (CoC, Canada), historian David Blackbourn (Harvard, US), Hydrologist and Social Entrepreneur Michal Kravcik (People and Water, Slovakia), Political Scientist Lena Partzsch (UFZ, Germany) and environmental consultant Eva Sternfeld (CESDRRC, China). In the afternoon, there will be seminars by ECLA faculty offering (cultural) historical, literary and philosophical perspectives on 'water'. There will also be student projects during the week, including the organization of an event discussing the privatization of water in Berlin, as well as an event in support of a water project in North-East Africa.
Undergraduate students from other universities as well as ECLA-alumni are welcome during the week. If you would like to attend the SWW 2008, please send an email briefly stating your motivation to Fiona Schnuettgen (f.schnuettgen@ecla.de) by April 22. Participation at the conference and accommodation is free, but travel costs cannot be reimbursed. There is only a limited number of places available for external students.
