Das trinationale Doktorandenprogramm „European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE)“ der Universität Hamburg erhält die Förderung „International Promovieren in Deutschland (IPID)“ des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD). Aus über 160 Anträgen wurde EDLE als einziges an einer rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät geführtes Programm ausgewählt.
Mit der Förderung durch den DAAD im Umfang von bis zu 300.000 Euro wird die Universität Hamburg gezielt als Standort der internationalen und interdisziplinären Doktorandenausbildung erneut gestärkt. Bereits im Jahr 2010 wurde EDLE von der Europäischen Kommission als Erasmus-Mundus-Exzellenzprogramm ausgewählt und mit 6 Mio. Euro gefördert.
An EDLE sind neben der Universität Hamburg die Universitäten Bologna und Rotterdam als Partner beteiligt. Das indische Indira Ghandi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, ist assoziiertes Mitglied. Die strukturierte Ausbildung an den drei Partneruniversitäten und wahlweise in Mumbai führt in drei Jahren zur Promotion. Jährlich vergibt EDLE bis zu 15 Stipendien für international ausgerichtete Dissertationen zur ökonomischen Analyse des Rechts. Derzeit werden 26 Promotionsstudierende aus elf Ländern betreut. Das Doktorandenprogramm wird am Institut für Recht und Ökonomik von Jun.-Prof. Patrick C. Leyens geleitet.
