New Leuphana MOOC: Educational Objective Innovation

Henning Zuehlsdorff Pressestelle
Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

The Digital School of Leuphana University of Lüneburg is expanding its Internet-based course offerings. Starting on October 8th this year, it offers a massive open online course (MOOC) entitled “Solution and Innovation Skills” in conjunction with the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen and the European Union research project “LLLightinEurope”. With this online-course, the partner universities take up the topic of innovation: participants learn how to develop and implement new ideas. The ten-week course is taught in English and is free of charge and open to everyone.

The basic idea of the course is that systematic development and implementation of innovation is possible for everyone. Participants learn special techniques to do so while acquiring the skills to solve complex problems. The concept of the class is based on the latest scientific research, developed as part of “LLLightinEurope”, which was conducted under the direction of Zeppelin University. Researchers from such institutions as the Harvard Business School, the MIT Media Lab, the Harvard Kennedy School, the University of Luxembourg, the Wageningen University and the TIAS School for Business and Society in the Netherlands have helped to develop the ideas for this course.

Video-inputs and contributions by renowned researchers and experienced experts from across the business world form the foundation of the course assignments. Academic readings and practical examples complete the course content. Successful participants receive a university certificate along with 5 credits (ECTS). Online-tests offered before and after the course help determine by how much participants have improved their complex problem solving skills.

The course organizers promise to deliver a special learning experience: “Our online course offerings are characterized by world leading experts in their fields providing their input, and collaboration in international study groups,” said Holm Keller, the Vice President of Leuphana. He pointed out that, unlike other MOOCs, this course offers intensive interaction with students enrolled in the groups. This is why the Leuphana course is best described as a Mentored Open Online Course.
