The MMA in Singapore bundled technology trends for digital medical technology

Mona Okroy-Hellweg Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
IVAM Fachverband für Mikrotechnik

Every two years, Singapore is the venue for the Medical Fair Asia and the co-located component fair Medical Manufacturing Asia (MMA). At the MMA, international manufacturers and suppliers in medical manufacturing meet to discuss current trends and present their innovations to the Asian market. The exhibitions took place from August 29-31, recording the highest number ever, with 1,220 exhibitors from 62 countries, including 23 joint pavilions.

The IVAM Microtechnology Network was again represented with an international joint pavilion after successful trade fair appearances in the years 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Before the fair, the IVAM exhibitors were invited to company visits with factory tours in Singapore. The delegation visited Global Tronic, an expert in mechanical metalworking, and the company SANWA, whose main products are microfluidic structures for biomedical and other applications.

On the first day of the MMA, Senior Minister of State, Ministry for Trade and Invest, Dr. Koh visited the IVAM area. The medical graduate was very interested in the technological innovations that were exhibited and informed himself comprehensively about the importance of micro- and nanotechnologies for the development of medical devices.

The trends of the exhibition, in particular products for digital applications such as sensors were also discussed in the accompanying experts’ forum. On the first day IVAM invited to the forum with a focus on "High-Tech for Medical Devices". Dr. Thomas R. Dietrich, Managing Director of IVAM, led through the program, which was presented by the exhibitors of the joint pavilions of IVAM and of the Japanese prefecture of Fukushima. Highlights were biocompatible implants, nano- and macroporous membranes with antibacterial properties, innovative catheter technologies, flexible electronics for medical sensors or a portable robot system that can relieve the human back during hard work.

The international exhibitors of the IVAM area were highly satisfied with the contacts that were made in Singapore. Already during the company visits there were very successful talks between European and Asian companies. Thus, after the fair, an NDA was already concluded between companies that want to work together in the future. For the year 2020, IVAM is again planning a joint participation for the MMA in Singapore.
