Universität Basel

The President`s Board of the University of Basel has appointed Prof. Dr. Cordula Kropik as Assistant Professor of German Medieval Studies and General Literature.

Cordula Kropik is currently working at the University of Leipzig on a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). She will take up her five-year position in the Department of Languages and Literatures at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on 1 September 2019.

Born in 1977 in Jena (Germany), Kropik studied German Philology, Phonetics, and Political Science at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena. She received her doctorate in 2006 with a prize-winning thesis on the literary constitution of the Middle High German heroic epic. Her habilitation on the subject of the courtly novel was supported by a grant from the DFG. After her habilitation in 2014, she worked as a private lecturer in Jena and in 2015 took on a substitute professorship for Older German Literature at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In 2016/2017, a research stay took her to the University of Basel, where she also held teaching assignments.

In her research, Kropik examines German literature from the middle ages to the early modern period. Her primary focus is on aspects such as poetics and aesthetics, narratology as well as literary and cultural theory. She attaches great importance to thinking across disciplinary borders, and she likes to deal with methodological and conceptual questions. Her present research focuses, among other things, on the song culture in the 15th and 16th century, aesthetical concept formation of medieval literature as well as the interplay between lyric, narration, and memory.
