Prestigious US honour for HHU scientist

The National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America has announced the election of this year’s members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Professor Dr Wolf B. Frommer from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) is the only university researcher in Germany honoured this year.

Professor Frommer is a plant molecular biologist, Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Institute for Molecular Physiology and member of the CEPLAS Cluster of Excellence at HHU. The “Web of Science” analysis platform has honoured him as a “Highly Cited Researcher” every year since 2017. Professor Frommer, who has diverse research interests, has received many honours in the fields of both plant biology and human medicine.

He is the sixth university professor conducting research in Germany to be elected to membership of the renowned American scientific organisation. HHU President Professor Dr Anja Steinbeck extended her congratulations, saying: “We are incredibly proud that Professor Frommer has been elected to membership of the National Academy of Sciences. His dedication and research have made a key contribution to expanding our understanding of plant systems. Congratulations on this impressive success, which also boosts the research profile of our University at an international level.”

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, non-profit organisation and was founded in 1863 by the US President at the time, Abraham Lincoln. Together with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, it advises the US government and other organisations on scientific, technical and health policy issues. Those elected in 2024 bring the total number of active members to 2,617 and the total number of international members to 537.
