University of Greifswald re-opens application for Rudolf-Stundl-Award for Textile Art

Jan Meßerschmidt Presse- und Informationsstelle
Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald

The Rudolf-Stundl-Foundation at the University of Greifswald has opened the competition for the 2014 Rudolf-Stundl-Award for Textile Arts. The prize is awarded for outstanding academic and artistic work related to textiles or neighbouring fields of material culture. The foundation board extended the applica-tion deadline for the award of 700 Euro until 31st December 2014. The contest will be held every four years and accepts submissions from all members of the University of Greifswald as well as the 26 international partner universities.

Rudolf Stundl (1897 – 1990), the initiator of artisan rug making in the Region of Western Pomerania, founded the award in 1985. The competition seeks to advance the academic discourse on the topic of textiles. The spectrum of possible contributions ranges from works of art using textiles to research on historical, art historical, technical or economic aspects of textiles and their production. Contributions may also address artefacts of material culture and items from university collections, where these relate to textiles and their production. Work on the connections between textiles and overarching issues such as marketing, communication, ecology and digital media may also be submitted.

The contest for the Rudolf-Stundl-Award is held for the first time in nineteen years. In 2013 the charter of the Stundl-Foundation was revised and a new foundation board was elected. Keeping in mind the original intention of the founder (Rudolf Stundl), the new board updated the focus and framework of the prize. For the first time, not only members of the University of Greifswald are able to enter the competition. In order to strengthen international partnerships, submissions will be accepted from members of all 26 partner universities in North and South America, Australia, South-East-Asia, Japan as well as Northern and Eastern Europe.

The artwork has to be submitted to the head of the Academic Art Collection, Dr. Birgit Dahlenburg, until 31st December 2014. All applicants must provide proof of intellectual property over the submitted item(s).
