In the past decade, youth in China have faced rapid social, economic, and political changes that have reshaped their identities and aspirations. This talk explores how younger generations navigate these shifts, balancing personal ambitions with evolving expectations. How do they experience today’s economic and political realities? How have their values, worldviews, and sense of self changed over time? And what do these transformations mean for China’s future and its role in the world? The talk is followed by an interactive discussion with students from HTWG, where they will share their own perspectives on the future, youth, and global change in China.
Professor Biao Xiang, the director at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, has an extensive academic background, having previously served as a Professor of Social Anthropology at Oxford University. His co-authored book Self as Method: Thinking Through China and the World was one of the most impactful books of 2020 on Douban, China’s major cultural platform. In addition to his work on identity and recognition, Professor Xiang has also worked extensively on migration, focusing on Chinese migration patterns and their socio-cultural implications.
