Víctor Pérez-Díaz and Michele Salvati will discuss how civil society has evolved in Spain and Italy in recent decades, and what the preconditions are for a civil polity. Among the questions which will be addressed will be whether or not there are lessons (good or bad) for the future construction of Europe.
Biographical notes:
Víctor Pérez-Díaz is Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid and cur-rently Visiting Professor at the WZB. He's been teaching at Harvard, MIT, California (San Diego), NYU and Sciencs Po (Paris). His books include: State, bureaucracy and civil society, MacMillan, 1978; The Return of Civil Society, Harvard, 1993; and Spain at the Croos-Roads, Harvard, 1999.
Michele Salvati is Professor of Economics at the State University of Milan. He wrote two highly influential contributions in shaping the corporatist debate in the 1980s: The Responses of Two Ruling Classes, in S. Berger, ed., Organizing Interests in Western Europe, 1981; and The Italian Inflation, in L. Lindberg and C. Mayer, eds., The Politics of Inflation and Economic Stagnation, 1985. A member of the Italian National Assembly between 1996 and 2001, he has become one of the most prominent public intellectuals in Italy writing a regular column in Corriere della Sera on basic issues intersecting politics, economics and society.
David Soskice is Research Professor of Political Economy at the WZB where he was Director of the Research Unit for Economic Change and Employment from 1990 to 2001. He is also Re-search Professor of Political Science at Duke University and has recently been appointed LSE Centennial Professor (European Political Economy). He and Peter Hall published an edited vol-ume, Varieties of Capitalism (2001) in which much of his work is summarised. He and Wendy Carlin have recently completed Macroeconomics: Institutions, Information, Imperfections which will be published later this year.
The session will be chaired by David Soskice and held in English.
