Future Challenges for Media Management & Monitoring

The workshop covers a variety of topics dealing with digital media content. Topics are multimedia content management in archives for audio, video and images; monitoring and analysis of multimedia content for market research and copyright protection; personalized access to digital content in domestic and mobile networked environments; creation and indexing of multimedia content for future applications and an overview on state of the art in research on multimedia content analysis and retrieval.

The increasing availability of broadband media networks and the associated increase of available multimedia content in databases, broadcasts and streaming media have generated new requirements for applications and technologies with digital media management. The effective organisation of and access to digital content of any kind remains one of the most important challenges in the Digital Age. This makes the development of powerful and efficient methodologies for indexing and retrieval of multimedia data one of today's most relevant and fastest-growing research areas.

The workshop "Future Challenges for Media Management and Monitoring" will cover a variety of topics dealing with digital media content including:
- Multimedia content management in archives for audio, video & images
- Monitoring and analysis of multimedia content for market research and copyright protection
- Personalised access to digital content in domestic & mobile networked environments
- Creation and indexing of multimedia content for future applications
- State of the art in research on multimedia content analysis & retrieval

The two-day event aims to bring together the key-players in the related fields including researchers and practitioners from academia and industry, application users, and content providers. It will serve as a forum for discussion, presentation, and exploration of available and developing technology and applications. The target is to get an overview on the available technology and to understand the requirements and common challenges of the business domain and match them with current and future RTD directions.

The workshop is organised by the Multimedia Information Systems working group at Fraunhofer IGD as a dissemination event for the research project DIRECT-INFO, which comprises eight partner organisations from five different European countries. The project deals with the development of new technologies for media monitoring and multimodal analysis of broadcasted content. It is supported by the European Commission's IST research programme, which addresses the workshop related topics through the strategic objectives "Semantic Based Knowledge and Content Systems" as well as "Networked Audio Visual Systems and Homeplattforms" defined in the IST Work Programme 2005 - 2006.

The Multimedia Information Systems group is part of Fraunhofer IGD's "Medical Imaging and Cognitive Computing" department. The work group is focusing on the development of various technologies and applications based on the creation, analysis and indexing of multimedia content. This includes tools for enhanced video streaming, where temporal synchronised multimedia information is embedded in video content, and applications for media monitoring, analysis and retrieval. Specific technology areas are content based identification and classification of digital media, broadcast monitoring, video analysis and copyright protection.
