B-IT Tutorial: Robot Middleware and Integration Frameworks

Robot Middleware and Integration Frameworks, Bonn, Germany, Dec. 13 - 15, 2005

Seamless integration of robot manipulation and robot mobility is a topic
of uttermost interest for traditional robot industry as much as for an
emerging service robotic industry. To account for the diversity of hardware
and software components and their interaction and communication in an
integrated system a variety of robot middleware and integration frame-
works have been proposed in the recent past. These middleware approaches
primarily focus on mobile robots. Little work has been done so far towards
middleware concepts and integration frameworks which allow an integration
of mobility and manipulation.

This tutorial has two objectives: First and foremost the tutorial will
present the state of the art in robot middleware and integration frameworks
and the latest research results on this topic. The speakers are the authors
and developers of the most prevalent middleware concepts and integration
frameworks for mobile robots today. The second objective is to start a
discussion on whether and how existing approaches can be extended towards
a seamless integration of mobility and manipulation. Furthermore a study
group "Middleware for Robot Manipulation and Mobility" will be established.

The tutorial targets a broad audience. System and application engineers
from robotic and system integration industry are as much invited and
encouraged to attend the tutorial as the academic robotics community.

Venue
=====
The tutorial takes place in the former German Parliament (Deutscher
Bundestag). The building does not only stand for a short period of the
German history before the reunification but also has an impressive
modern architecture and a beautiful view to the river Rhine. The
building is now used as a congress center. Included in the tutorial
is a guided tour through the former German Parliament.

Hilfe
