The control of protein adsorption at materials surfaces is still a challenge in research and is of great interest for the development of various biotechnological and biomedical applications. The 94th Bunsen colloquium is held for scientists aiming at a detailed understanding of protein adsorption on a molecular level. This includes the study of the adsorption mechanism as well as the characterization of the protein-interface interactions. The colloquium will bring together scientist from theory and experiments. Novel protein-interface systems will be presented and discussed which allow for a controlled adsorption of proteins at aqueous-solid interfaces and an optimized biological activity of immobilized proteins. The following topics will be covered:
· Protein adsorption at planar interfaces and colloidal particles
· Protein-interface interactions
· Mechanism of protein adsorption and protein resistance
· Surface modifications to optimize or suppress protein adsorption (e. g., polyelectrolyte multilayers, polyelectrolyte brushes, self-assembled monolayers)
· Conformation and biological activity of proteins at interfaces
