Science and technology have raised our standard of living, provided food and medication to billions, introduced us to cultural treasures and expanded our horizons. They have also become the most valuable economic commodities, far exceeding the value of oil and other natural resources. At the same time, they have erased boundaries among countries and cultures, produced an aging zero-growth population in the most advanced societies and a rapidly increasing poverty-stricken population elsewhere. Four of the six billion inhabitants of the planet are not participating in the technology revolution. More and more economic power is concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people, both on a global scale and on the scale of individual countries, raising severe doubts about the future of democracy. Various aspects of this dilemma are discussed by a leading science and education policy maker.
Haim Harari is Professor of Physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, where he served as President from 1998 to 2001. He currently holds several chairman-ships, for example of the Davidson Institute of Science Education at the Weizmann Institute.
Besides his extensive scientific work in the field of Particle Physics, Harari has been involved in Science Education and Science Management and Policy Making. One of his great contributions to education is the establishment of "Perach" - a national tutoring and mentoring program in Israel. This one-on-one program currently involves 32.000 undergrad-uates who receive a tuition fellowship in return for helping a child from an underprivileged socio-economic background in its education.
Furthermore, Harari was chair of the National Panel on Science Education from 1991 to 1992, whose consecutive report has since been the blueprint for science education in Israel's schools.
His book "A View from the Eye of the Storm - Terror and Reason in the Middle East" was published in New York in 2005.
