International Conference "Invasion and Metastasis"

According to the American Cancer Society, about 559,650 Americans and 1,821,378 Europeans died of cancer in 2007. Most deaths were due, not to primary tumors, but rather to metastases. Recent findings in cancer research suggest that cancer stem cells are the source for metastases to develop as they are resistant to traditional therapies. Cancer stem cells and metastases as well as new therapy concepts are the main foci of the International Conference "Invasion and Metastasis" (March 26th - March 29th, 2008) in Berlin, Germany. The keynote lecture, "Mechanisms of formation of metastatic cells", will be given by Prof. Robert Weinberg (Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Cambridge, USA).

Dear Sir/Madam,
Dear Colleagues,

According to the American Cancer Society, about 559,650 Americans and 1,821,378 Europeans died of cancer in 2007. Most deaths were due, not to primary tumors, but rather to metastases. Metastases are generated when single cancer cells detach from the original tumor, enter blood or lymphoid vessels, circulate through the bloodstream, and then settle in regions remote from the primary tumor. This process is only partially understood.

Recent findings in cancer research suggest that cancer stem cells are the source for metastases to develop as they are resistant to traditional therapies. Cancer stem cells are defined as degenerated stem cells. The latest findings about cancer stem cells and development and migration of metastases as well as new therapy concepts are the main foci of the

International Conference "Invasion and Metastasis"
March 26th - March 29th, 2008, Berlin

to which I would like to cordially invite you.

Please note that the conference will be opened in the Leibniz Hall of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, Jägerstraße 22/23, 10117 Berlin Mitte on Wednesday, March 26th. On the following days, from Thursday, March 27th till Saturday, March 29th, the conference will continue at the Max Delbrück Communications Center (MDC.C), Robert-Rössle-Straße 10, 13125 Berlin.

The keynote lecture, "Mechanisms of formation of metastatic cells", will be given by Prof. Robert Weinberg from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Cambridge, USA. Prof. Weinberg, who also teaches at the nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will talk about the crucial steps in the formation of metastases. He discovered oncogenes, genes that induce cancer when disrupted or mutated, and tumor suppressor genes, which also play a key role in tumor development and distribution when changed.

Cancer stem cells and their role in the progression of colon cancer is the main issue of the talk by Prof. Thomas Brabletz (University of Freiburg, Germany). Dr. Jonathan Sleeman (Institute of Toxicology and Genetics of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany) will speak about the role of lymph nodes in the distribution of tumors. The influence of healthy, non-degenerated cells on the development of cancer is illustrated by Dr. Raghu Kalluri (Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, USA).

Another main topic of the conference is the tumor and its environment. New results suggest that the environment affects the tumor much more than previously assumed and is also more important for its survival. Prof. Eugene Lukanidin (Danish Cancer Society, Denmark) will speak about the interactions between the tumor and the bordering connective tissue, the stroma. Furthermore, cells of the immune system are embedded in the tumor environment. Their part in this interplay is illuminated by Dr. Lisa Coussens (University of California, USA). Dr. Sachie Hiratsuka-Nakamura (Tokyo Womens Medical University, Japan) will explain how a primary tumor prepares remote tissues, like the lung, for the settlement of metastases.

New findings about radio- and immunotherapy constitute another highlight of the conference. Prof. Marc Mareel (University Ghent, Belgium) will report on how low doses of radiation actually animate metastatic cells to proliferate instead of killing them. Prof. Peter Altevogt (German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg, Germany) will talk about specific antibodies to fight tumors.

Altogether, about 160 scientists from Europe, Israel, Japan, the USA, Singapore, and Turkey will participate in the conference. The conference organizers are Prof. Walter Birchmeier and Dr. Ulrike Ziebold (both Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch) and Prof. Jürgen Behrens (University of Erlangen). Both Prof. Birchmeier and Prof. Behrens have published significant results about the formation of metastases at the MDC during the past years.

Please find attached the program of the conference Invasion and Metastasis 2008, an RSVP form, you directions to the MDC, and a campus map (also available at http://www.mdc-berlin.de/ueber_das_mdc/adresse/index.htm.) Please fill out and return the enclosed RSVP form to the MDC press office.

I look forward to welcoming you at this conference in Berlin.

Sincerely,

Barbara Bachtler
