Scientific Symposium "New Frontiers in Hodgkin Lymphoma"

Let me please welcome you to this International Symposium on New Frontiers in Hodgkin Lymphoma which is taking place to honor Prof. Dr. Volker Diehl. As you probably know, Volker has turned 70 this year and has been awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz by the German Government for his life-term achievements in the field. For the meeting, we have chosen the Hyatt Cologne offering a wonderful communicative environment for scientific discussion and networking. The presentations focus on new aspects in the biology of HL, translational approaches aimed at the development of new treatment strategies, the latest results and perspectives as well as some new approaches in handling this fascinating disease.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Engert
Chairman of the GHSG

We very much hope that this focused symposium will give a comprehensive update on major achievements in the field of Hodgkin Lymphoma and point out trends and tasks for future activity. On behalf of my teacher and friend, Volker Diehl, I cordially welcome you to this meeting.

This meeting is taking place to celebrate Prof. Volker Diehl's 70th birthday and his life-time achievement in the field of Hodgkin Lymphoma. For his work he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz this September by the German government, which is one of the highest national recognitions.

As we all know, Volker Diehl has made a stunning career, both as researcher in the biology of Hodgkin Lymphoma and as founder and former chairman of the German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG). He clearly envisioned that improvements in this usually fatal malignancy would only be possible in the context of prospective randomized trials paralleled by scientific research projects. Today, the GHSG is in its 6th generation of clinical trials and has just opened the 18th large prospectively randomized study, HD18. In addition, numerous phase-I and phase-II studies were conducted. More than 15000 Hodgkin patients have been treated in GHSG trials with more than 400 centers contributing here in Germany and countries such as the Czech Republic, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and others. Volker Diehl has always played a pivotal role in the GHSG. His work has resulted in important achievements in the treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma and will continue to do so in the years to come.
