Megacities: Health, Geomatics

In 2009 the International Summer School Programme "Megacities: Health, Geomatics and Climate Change" is combined with the well-established courses on infectious disease epidemiology (IDE) (website: http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/gesundhw/ag2/summerschoolide/ ) and Multilevel Modelling for Public Health and Health services Research (MLM)(website: http://iph-partnership.org), to improve the knowledge about geo-statistical and epidemiological methods for controlling the predominant health problems of the 21st century.
The course will focus on various dimensions of environment and health in megacities, such as megacity development, demographic and epidemiological transitions, population projection, diseases' burden, health determinants, and climate change. The aim is to combine theoretical and lab work on statistical/epidemiological and spatially explicit techniques in a transdisciplinary approach.

Our participants will be enabled
o to understand the multidisciplinarity of the problems and their linkages in megacities;
o to learn about epidemiological transitions in megacities;
o to apply commonly used statistical and geostatistical techniques in health nsciences and geography;
o to work more effectively in collaboration with other disciplines for investigating the existing problems in megacities and
o to develop sustainable strategies for the improvement of living conditions of megacity populations.

PROGRAMME
o Megacities: concepts, development, driving forces and prospects
o Megacities and emerging diseases, epidemiological transitions
o Epidemiological methods for urban health
o Climate impact and other environmental stressors in megacities
o Satellite data to assess the urban environment
o Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analyses in megacities
o Statistical, geo-statistical and spatial modelling
o Modelling the health impact of a changing environment
o Urban planning and infrastructure in Megacities

Teaching methods
The course contains introductory lectures, computer classes, individual consultation and two assignments.
Teaching language is English.

Hilfe
