The Role of New Media in Environmental Governance Master

Master Students Organize Forum on "The Role of New Media in Environmental Governance"

On Friday 16 April 2010 at 8 a.m. in lecture hall 1199 (KG I), speakers from Canada, Brazil, England, and Germany will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using new media for environmental governance, a term that is now widely used by development organizations which can be translated as the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented. The "Freiburg Forum on Environmental Governance" is being organized exclusively by students of the "Master in Environmental Governance" (MEG) program. The goal of the program is to train future leaders in the areas of sustainable development and environment.

Heather Creech from the International Institute for Sustainable Development in Winnipeg (Canada) will explore the role of social networks to fight major global problems of our times like climate change. In her talk she will demonstrate how environmental organizations use social networks like Facebook to increase awareness for their cause and analyze to what extent the new technologies are changing the ways in which these organizations work and how Internet users react to their presence.

In a talk entitled "New Media: From Social Exclusion to Social Inclusion," Gilson Schwartz from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) will shed light on the problem of insufficient access to the Internet in certain regions. Despite tremendous increases in the number of Internet users in the past decade, there are still communities which have no access at all to the World Wide Web. Another barrier which prevents many people from taking advantage of new technologies is lack of knowledge about them. Schwartz will discuss the implications of such inequality for managing natural resources and conserving the environment

A panel discussion with Shaylesh Patel from the charity organization Healthy Planet, Jan Burck from the non-profit organization Germanwatch, Rodrigo Vargas, PhD student from the University of Freiburg, and Dr. Hansjörg Elshorst from Transparency International will address the possibilities and constraints of using various Internet tools and information and communication technologies (ICTs) to monitor the environment and prevent its degradation, as well as to support environmental campaigns, promoting in society a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
The experts will place special emphasis on the ways in which new media technologies and ICTs can tackle threats to the environment such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

The forum is being organized solely by MEG students. MEG students and alumni are also invited to take part in workshops and discussion groups on 15 and 17 April. Further information and a copy of the program are available at www.megforum.uni-freiburg.de/program_02.
