What is more important - for a researcher to be good with words, or for a journalist to have a solid grounding in science? This is one of the questions to be discussed at the conference on the relationship between the press, science and society, due to take place on Friday, 28 May at the European Academy, Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC).
As well as communication experts from all over Europe, Peter Grünberg, the German Nobel prize-winner for physics, will be taking part in the conference. Grünberg was awarded this prestigious honour for his discovery of the GMR (giant magneto resistance) effect. Also present will be Nuno Crato, the Portuguese mathematician and statistician, who in 2007 was awarded the European Union's science communication prize, and the Hungarian science journalist Istvan Palugay, who led various international renowned press associations.
The conference is at the same time the closing act of the MyScience project - an initiative with the aim of bringing science closer to a wider public. Thus MyScience has seen the training of some 90 young journalists in workshops, with an emphasis on both journalistic writing and on contact with the everyday world of research. The initiative was supported by the European Commission with the aim of promoting contact between the journalists and the world of research and getting the research results out of the laboratories and into the light of day.
A special edition of ACADEMIA - the science magazine of EURAC - is dedicated to the MyScience project and contains articles written by project participants. The three best pieces will be awarded prizes during the conference, while creating a framework for the discussion of science communication prompted by the four research centres where the young journalists carried out their training: EURAC, the University of Vienna, the BioTalentum laboratory at Budapest and the Prague Institute for Chemical Technology. Albert Zink, head of the EURAC Institute for Mummies and the Iceman, will lead the round table discussion in the context of the conference. Zink has written important studies on world-renowned mummies such as Ötzi the Iceman and Tutankhamen. A member of the European Commission's Department for Ethical Questions will participate in the discussions as an expert in the ethical aspects of scientific research.
The meeting will conclude with a discussion of science communication, focussing on the European Commission. Experts from Italy, Belgium, Poland and Turkey will present outstanding examples of their work and sketch out the future prospects for the wider publication of scientific works.
