The Future of Banking and Finance in China – Prospects & Challenges

China’s economic change and its rise as a global powerhouse in the last thirty years is one of the most important events of our times. The recent global financial and economic crisis has accelerated the momentum of this process and the shift from West to East. Part of the overall development is the emergency of a modern banking and finance industry in China particularly driven by the WTO-entry of China in the year 2001. The recent decision of the State Council of China to develop Shanghai into an international financial centre by 2020 will have an enormous impact for the future development of China’s financial sector. This includes the internationalization of the RMB, the continuing reform and opening up of China’s banking and capital markets, and the upgrade of Shanghai to an international financial centre. The conference aims to intensify the exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese and the European banking and finance community. It brings together leading academics and decision makers from the industry as well as regulators of China and Europe to discuss the development and future of China’s banking and finance sector and its integration in the global financial architecture. The conference also provides a forum for researchers, banking executives, supervisory authorities as well as interested audience and press to exchange their views on the issue.

Leading questions are:
- In which direction will China’s banking reform lead to?
- What lessons can be learned by Chinese and European regulatory authorities from the banking crisis?
- How can Shanghai develop itself as an international finance centre?
