How comes that we have chosen exactly this issue?
The urban development in different parts of the world is confronting us with huge challenges, which seem to require us to rethink existing approaches – and to integrate different expertise: e.g. concerns of sustainability, bankability, operational feasibility, livability.
Sequential / sectoral methods are no longer appropriate – simultaneous working methods and tools are requested, in order to create liveable conditions for dwellers in booming cities or to improve the quality of the urban environment in shrinking cities.
In other words: Through-going processes are needed, starting from visions without separating strategic goals from implementation phases, and integrating respective public institutions as well as professionals and the financial sector – particularly in regions, where the public framework is not that developed.
Frequently the term of ‘Masterplanning’ is used, when describing those processes – for largescale urban projects down to larger building and infrastructure projects. We observe that there is no proper definition of Masterplanning and that there are different interpretations.
This is, where our Symposium question is located. As Masterplanning obviously comprises both vision/strategy and implementation components, we intend to divide the discussion into two panels, each lasting approx. 1.45 hours.
