Standards in South-South Trade and Opportunities for Advancing the Sustainability Agenda

Under the title "Standards in South-South Trade and Opportunities for Advancing the Sustainability Agenda” international experts will gather in Washington DC on November 30th and December 1st, 2011, for the annual conference of the Trade Standards Practitioners Network (TSPN). The conference aims at giving an overview of the current dimensions (commodities, regions, etc.) and rationales of South-South trade and the role and impacts of PVS for sustainable development.

The annual conference and the member meeting of the Trade Standards Practitioners Network (TSPN) in Washington DC are approaching.

A growing share of global trade is being carried out between developing countries and/or emerging markets. The enhanced South-South economic integration leads to growing interest in regional harmonization and equivalence among Private Voluntary Standards (PVS). Therefore, some developing countries pro-actively adopt agri-food standards in regional and inter-regional trade. Also, large national companies in the South tend to increasingly use PVS to avoid dual or triple track approaches regarding sustainability criteria.

In order to assess the role of standards in South-South trade regarding their potential development benefit the conference will draw a detailed picture of the diversity of products traded and the spatial heterogeneity of trade flow, and explore impacts, potentials and limitations of standards in the South-South trade context.

During three interactive sessions conference participants will have the opportunity to explore and discuss the sub-topics:
1. "Impacts of International Timber Regulations on South-South Trade"
2. "Drivers for Standardization and Harmonization"
3. "SME Traders and Importers in the South"

The Objective of this event is to give a space for versatile professional discussion on the South-South trade topic and also for the connection between representatives from diverse stakeholders in the standards field from all over the world.

Interested parties who unfortunately can not join the conference in person will have the possibility to participate in a virtual conference workspace in form of a webinar. This webinar will provide an opportunity to inform oneself about the topics beforehand and to follow the sessions.
