The Research Center of Social and Cultural Studies Mainz (SOCUM) and the Research Unit Historical Cultural Sciences (HKW) of Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (JGU) will be hosting the second Mainz Symposium of the Social and Cultural Sciences on April 25 – 27, 2013. The title of this year's international and interdisciplinary symposium is "Practices and their Bodies. What Kind of Artefact is the Lived Body?” It puts the body that, as the subject of research, still sits very firmly in the grasp of the natural sciences, in the focus of cultural studies and social sciences. This symposium, which will firmly establish this interdisciplinary and international series of events in the academic and scientific landscape, proposes a highly topical, sociocultural way of viewing the body, namely as a component of material culture. In recent years the term PRACTICES has often been used to express this perspective – a conception of human action and behavior that places controlled body movement at the center of social life and considers bodies as artefacts and media of social practices.
The symposium will be held at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz on April 25 – 27, 2013. The participation fee of EUR 10 is payable at the symposium.

The conference aims to consolidate the contributions of diverse disciplines such as sociology, history, ethnology, and media studies in order to converge on possible answers to fundamental questions relating to a sociocultural view of the body: What kind of artefact is the lived body? How many bodies does a human being have? What is the communication technological potential of bodies? What are the physical aspects of bodily perceptions and of 'mental' activities? And what sort of variants need to be defined to take into account animal, dead, embryologically underdeveloped and engineered 'marginal bodies'? Guest speakers from Europe, Japan, and the USA will address these and many other questions during a total of eight thematic sessions.
Furthermore, this year's Georg Forster Lecture will be given during the conference on Friday, April 25, at 6:30 pm. The guest speaker will be Dutch philosopher Professor Dr. Annemarie Mol of the University of Amsterdam.
