Persons with an increased diabetes risk are often not identified in medical practice, although there is good evidence that the progression of hyperglycaemia to manifest diabetes can be prevented or delayed. Diabetes risk models provide the possibility of risk estimation based on parameters available to the general practitioner. For public-health interventions, risk factor questionnaires and risk scores can be used to stratify populations before inviting those at high risk to undergo further testing. Numerous risk-factor based prediction models for type 2 diabetes have been developed, but the estimation of individual risk and the development of risk scores with relevance for clinical practice and public health remain challenging.
The symposium will present recent developments and will provide the opportunity for a discussion of methods for deriving and validating prediction models, their application in different settings as well as associated barriers and benefits.
On the second day, current knowledge about cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent and treat diabetes will be presented. Furthermore, methodological challenges to assess effect measures and cost data will be discussed.
Objectives
• To introduce novel developments in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes
• To introduce the development, validation and application of prognostic models
• To provide a review of available diabetes risk prediction models
• To introduce risk models for micro- and macrovascular complications
• To discuss the role of novel biomarkers and genes in diabetes prognostic models
• To discuss the benefits, harms and barriers of diabetes prognostic models in routine care
• To discuss challenges to assess effect measures and cost data
The Working Group Epidemiology, Health Care & Economics of the BMBF Competence Network Diabetes mellitus and the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) invites clinicians and research scientists in the fields of type 2 diabetes prevention and chronic disease risk prediction to discuss these issues during a two-day symposium.
