The MIND Group chaired by Professor Thomas Metzinger of the Department of Philosophy at Mainz University will get together for their 22nd meeting at the Goethe University of Frankfurt/Main from April 22nd to 24th, 2015. The title of the meeting is “Inter-Acting Minds: Embodiment, Joint Agency, and Self-Consciousness.” All presentations and discussions will be in English. At its core, the meeting will be dedicated to recent advances in research on self-consciousness and social cognition. At the end of each day, the MIND Group invites interested people to attend the publicly accessible presentations given by the MIND Group’s prominent guests.
Dr. Fréderique de Vignemont of the Institute Jean-Nicod in Paris will give a presentation on "Pain and Self-Consciousness" on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015, at 6:15 p.m. Dr. Natalie Sebanz of the Department of Cognitive Science of the Central European University in Budapest will talk about "How T(w)o Act Together." This presentation will take place on Thursday, April 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. The MIND Meeting will be concluded on Friday, April 24th, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. by Professor Günther Knoblich’s presentation on "Agency in Social Interaction: Whose Body, Whose Actions, Whose Errors?" All three public lectures will take place at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), Campus Riedberg, Ruth-Moufang-Straße 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main. Attendance is free; registration is not required.
The MIND Group was established by Professor Thomas Metzinger of the Department of Philosophy of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2003. The purpose of this group is to offer young philosophers a platform to get in touch with the international research community and the most recent developments in contemporary philosophy of mind and the adjacent sciences. It provides junior members with the opportunity to discuss their current work with more experienced researchers. Furthermore, experts from the fields of philosophy of mind and ethics are enabled to connect with empirical researchers from cognitive science and neuroscience. Together, the members of the MIND Group constitute a constantly developing network which aims to advance new and seminal theories. Furthermore, the MIND Group seeks to cultivate new forms of interdisciplinarity.
Recent results of these co-operations across generations and disciplines manifest themselves in the Open MIND project. It was published on the occasion of the MIND Group’s 20th meeting (http://open-mind.net). Open MIND is a freely accessible digital collection of original scientific and philosophical papers published in English. It offers many thought-provoking dialogues between advanced philosophers and scientists and young academics on topics having to do with consciousness research and cognitive science. This unique and independent collection can be accessed worldwide by the interested reader.
Beyond this innovative gift to the international research community, a variable international group supported by the presence of prominent guests meets twice a year in Frankfurt. Currently, these non-public meetings are organized by Thomas Metzinger, Lisa Quadt, and Regina E. Fabry. The meetings usually take place in the Villa Giersch, which is the guest house of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS). The FIAS has supported the MIND Group by providing organizational resources for many years. In addition, the meetings of the MIND Group have been rendered possible by the generous funding provided by the Barbara Wengeler Foundation.
