Are agricultural interests placed above the wolves' right to exist? Should native peoples give way to nature reserves? The issues from the scientific discipline of Environmental Ethics are as diverse as life itself. Over 100 international experts will be coming together in July for the annual conference of the International Society for Environmental Ethics (ISEE) at Kiel University in order to discuss urgent environmental ethics issues such as the ones given above. From 22 to 25 July, the Kiel Gustav Radbruch Network for Philosophy and Ethics of the Environment (Gustav-Radbruch-Netzwerk) is inviting both scientists and interested members of the public to join in an active discussion. In addition to keynote speeches on issues relating to animal ethics, climate ethics, environmental ethics and sociological aspects, around 80 speakers will be presenting applied and philosophical approaches and theories.
On the opening day, 22 July, the Gustav Radbruch Network will be presenting itself to guests in a poster exhibition. Following on from this, in his opening presentation, Professor Thomas Potthast from Tübingen will be demonstrating how the term "biocenosis" (the community of living creatures) had its origins in Kiel and until today still remains an important term in environmental ethics. Both events on the opening day are open to the public and do not require registration, as is the second public highlight of the conference: "Energiewende konkret" (Concretizing the green-energy turn) is the programme point on Thursday, 23 July, which is on offer in cooperation with the Wissenschaftszentrum Kiel. Here, companies and institutions from Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark will be presenting their projects which have already been realised and start-up ideas for the energy transition.
This event is receiving financial support from the Michael Otto Foundation, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the Wissenschaftszentrum Kiel, the Organik-Stiftung Rolf und Dr. Windemuth Hennig as well as from Kiel University's fund for internationalisation and the university jubilee special fund.
This event is taking place as part of Kiel University's 350th anniversary. The university will be celebrating its birthday throughout the whole of 2015. From sporting events, concerts, lecture series and exhibitions to conferences and research projects: with over 2000 individual dates, the state university is showing itself at its very best and is inviting everyone to join in with the celebrations.
