For centuries, our Western perspective on the world has been shaped by the framework of the Westphalian system of states. But can we even still capture the (dis)order of today’s world using those categories? To what extent do they change or distort our perception of the “others”? In part 3 of the Berlin Correspondence series, Gabriele Metzler and Siba N. Grovogui explore the question whether the Western perspective belongs to the past. The audience is invited to discuss questions regarding political, economic, religious and social orders.
Violence, states of emergency and social (dis-)order –in her work, historian Gabriele Metzler deals with the disintegration of order. She examines the circumstances under which violence arises, how it spreads and develops its own dynamic, and how it can shape social orders. The disintegration of order is accompanied by the question of the actors involved – states are no longer the only entities acting in spaces of violence. Gabriele Metzler researches and teaches at the Humboldt University of Berlin with a focus on the history of violence as well as on the transformation of the state in Western Europe and the USA.
Political scientist Siba N. Grovogui is the director of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University. His work offers a long-standing focus on non-Western perspectives on (dis)order in the relationship between states and governments. In publications such as “Beyond Eurocentrism and Anarchy: Memories of International Order and Institutions”, he examines the changing traditional stakeholders in international relations. His research interests include political theory, transnationalism and diaspora. Born in Guinea, Grovogui obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and until 2014 held a professorship at Johns Hopkins University.
The Berlin Correspondences is the first series of events in the GORKI FORUM: a new platform for discourse and exchange under the direction of Esra Küçük. At the intersection of culture, politics and society, the Gorki Forum is collaborating with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Federal Foreign Office on a productive approach to social heterogeneity. The series is curated by Prof. Dr. Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, Dr. Andreas Görgen and Esra Küçük.
