On October 16, from 4.30 pm, Mafalda Sandrini, Kata Katz, Prof. Dr. Gernot Wolfram and Prof. Lars Grau are inviting to the fourth part of the lecture series „Challenges in the Creative Industries“. They will inspire you with research insights in the fields of cultural entities in a digital context, new prospects to empower a culture of failure in academia, and the debate on the strategic aspects of design. The event is public, please register: http://www.bit.ly/2HITHO3
4.30 pm: „Digital Memes“ (Wolfram)
Digital Memes. What kind of small cultural entities are digital memes? Why do they have the power to influence and activate the creativity of human beings? And why they are feared also as strong political instruments to camouflage hidden protest and alternative thoughts in non-democratic regimes? The lecture will give insights into current research approaches about digital memes, digital culture and into problems of designing sucessful memes on the basis of pre-formulated purposes.
5.00 pm: „Stories of Scientific Failure: New Prospects to Empower the Culture of Failure in Academia” (Sandrini & Katz)
The public imaginary of science is built upon the so-called “Eureka Moments”: brilliant, life-changing discoveries that made history. Failure is intrinsically built into the scientific method, as any discovery can be temporary. However, we only tell (and hence hear) about the successful scientific failures, those that become achievements. Thus, some questions arise spontaneously: how do we judge failure? Is failure bad in itself? Or is it beneficial only when it brings new recognition? The paper will investigate the culture of failure in science and why we need it in academic structures.
5.30 pm: „Strategic Design“ (Grau)
Buzzword or Must-Have? Strategic Design is a fairly young discipline in the ever changing profession, which also creates new requirements for the design education. By applying problem-solving techniques to “big picture” systemic challenges, strategic designers aim to create sustainable competitive advantages for their companies. Being involved in the entire value chain, strategic designers contribute to strategic planning, business management and implementation processes, facilitating the definition and implementation of innovation strategies. This lecture outlines the interdisciplinary work field and questions the demand for strategic design and its potential value in digital transformation processes.
