Sustainability and Life Cycle Modelling Training Workshop

The training aims to provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform sustainability studies via environmental, economic and social impact assessments. The training demonstrates the use of tools for sustainability analyses, including sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, and methods for communicating results. The course is divided into three modules.

Training Chair:

Prof. Dr. Gesa Beck - ABCircular GmbH

Lecturer:

Khadija Sarquah (M.Sc.) - ABCircular GmbH

Caitlin Walls (M.Eng.) - ABCircular GmbH

Janine Ölze - ABCircular GmbH

Overview:

Module 1 focuses on conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with the methods defined by the International Standards Organization (ISO 14040). This methodology provides useful information regarding a product’s environmental impact over its life cycle and supports strategic decision-making regarding product design, policy, and corporate strategy. This training offers technical know-how based on research and knowledge in this quickly-evolving area of circularity.

Module 2 evaluates the economic feasibility of processes and products utilizing material flow cost accounting (MFCA) conducted according to ISO 14051. MFCA is a tool used to optimize resource efficiency and effectively reduce operational costs. It is used to facilitate economically sustainable decisions for industrial processes and production.

Module 3 focuses on assessing the social impact of a process or product via social life cycle assessment conducted according to ISO 14040, and via framing to the SDGs. Historically, social aspects have only been marginal in the sustainability considerations of the industrial sector. This is why stakeholders are pushing companies to include more scientific and robust approaches to assessing social sustainability.

This training gives the background and skills suitable for practical social assessment studies. Furthermore, sustainability reporting will be introduced during the last day of the workshop.

Goals:

After participating in this training course, participants will be able to:

-Explore the relationship between the three dimensions of sustainability: social, environmental and economic

-Quantify environmental impacts using LCA tools

-Learn techno-economic assessment using the MFCA tool

-Gain practical know-how in social sustainability assessment
Master tools for real-world assessment

Target Group:

This training is intended for:

-Researchers

-Product designers

-Environmental practitioners

-Environmental consultants

-Research engineers

-Manufacturers
Businesses in the circular economy
