A major underlying question of this Research is thematized at the workshop: Why do we think that Germany and Taiwan are good starting points for analyzing the history of knowledge with a focus on materialities, on entangled history and on cultural and historical comparison? In the first place, there are direct and indirect contacts between the cultural histories of the two countries, the most important being the time when Taiwan was colonized by Japan. Hundreds of medical students and physicians spent time at German universities, attempting to absorb Western medicine. Secondly, there is the long history of entanglements in terms of production of medicinal plants. When Taiwan, around 1900 provided on third of the world’s camphor production, this meant to offer the basis for the production of explosives, and of celluloid, it was the first synthetic substance used as plastic material and for films.
