BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues

For more than 10 years, the BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues have been bringing together German and international water experts in Berlin to discuss global challenges, present expertise and promote solutions. The online event is primarily aimed at maximizing synergies in the field of research and development between companies and scientific institutions and driving forward successful long-term cooperations.

The 2024 edition will address the topic of Urban Water Resilience.

For more than 10 years, the BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues (BPB) have been bringing together German and international water experts in Berlin to discuss global challenges, present expertise and promote solutions. The online event is primarily aimed at maximizing synergies in the field of research and development between companies and scientific institutions and driving forward successful long-term cooperations. Every year, renowned experts from various areas of the water sector support the program as ambassadors.

Climate change presents one of the greatest threats to mankind. Our societies and cities must develop adaptation concepts to ensure not only prosperity but also our continued existence.

The BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues 2024 edition will address the topic of Urban Water Resilience. With the headline Reshaping Our Cities, the biggest climate change- related challenges in urban areas will be discussed with regard to water management. Together, we will look at successfully applied urban water resilience concepts and discuss their global transferability. The online conference is divided into two segments:

Segment I: Urban planning

Due to climate change and typical urban features – such as dense populations, extensive building paved surfaces and a lack of green spaces – cities are increasingly grappling with extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, storms, extreme rainfall and flood- ing. Against this backdrop, it is crucial to develop sustainable, adaptable and resilient urban water systems, which should be integral to sustainable urban planning and redevel- opment efforts.

In the first segment of the conference, we will address the challenges of climate adaptation and explore strategies for achieving urban water resilience, with a focus on urban planning. The umbrella concept for a climate-resilient urban development − sponge cities − will be discussed along with the associated tasks of urban planning. Sponge cities are an innova- tive approach in urban water management that aims to enhance cities’ resilience to heat, heavy rainfall, and flooding. This involves integrating permeable materials, green spaces, roof gardens and rainwater storage tanks into the urban infrastructure, allowing rainwater to be efficiently absorbed, stored and used.
This not only reduces the load on the sewage system, but also improves the urban microclimate and promotes biodiversity. Sponge cities thus significantly contribute to the sus- tainable development of climate-resilient cities by mimicking natural water cycles and enabling resource-efficient water management. Taking Berlin as a starting point, the BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues 2024 will discuss concrete steps towards becoming a sponge city.

To maintain and develop green infrastructure in the face of climate change, it is essential to capture and monitor the features that characterize urban water resilience systems. Developing indicators for these systems is complex but crucial for driving action and tracking progress in urban planning. This enables urban planners to recognize the need for action based on data – and financing institutions to use funds efficiently.

Necessary processes and framework conditions for implementing resilient sponge cities will be presented and discussed drawing on national and international best practice projects by representatives from science, water management, politics and urban planning.

Segment II: Infrastructure and digitalization

The second segment will focus on resilient water supply and wastewater disposal in cities and their interaction with other infrastructures and urban services against the backdrop of digitalization. Digitalization offers a unique opportunity to overcome various challenges, particularly for cities like Berlin and many others in Europe where water infrastructure networks are often over a century old. Utilities worldwide are facing the urgent task of making their water supply and infrastructure more resilient while meeting strict sustainability standards.

New technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, will fundamentally transform the water industry. Sensors and automated systems can provide real-time data on the condition of water pipes, allowing quicker detection and repair of leaks. In addition, advanced analytics and algorithms can improve forecasting of water consumption and efficient resource management.

The opportunities offered by digitalization for the joint management and planning of resilient urban water systems and infrastructures must be utilized. Only through close collab- oration between scientists, technology providers, utilities and policy makers a sustainable and future-proof water supply can be ensured.
