International Land Use Symposium ILUS 2019: Call for Abstracts open

Heike Hensel Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für ökologische Raumentwicklung e. V.

Sustainable spatial development requires more and more precise and comprehensive information for planning and political decisions. This applies in particular to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. An international symposium to be held in Paris from 4 to 6 December 2019 will address current developments in the analysis, modelling and visualisation of data on land use and land cover changes. Suggested topics for presentations can be submitted by 29 March.

Under the umbrella "Land use changes: Trends and projections", the ILUS 2019 is dedicated to interdisciplinary concepts on how current developments in spatial analysis and data modelling can contribute to sustainable resource management and better support planning as well as urban and regional development. To this end, the symposium covers three major topics: Land Use and Land Cover Change Observations, Metropolization: Challenges and Risks as well as Drivers, Mechanisms, Tools. An open section provides space for other relevant contributions.

The symposium will be opened with contributions of renowned international scientists in the area of spatial analysis and spatial planning. Keynote speakers include Mike Batty, Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at the University College London/Great Britain, Martino Pesaresi, Joint Research Centre in Ispra/Italy, Norbert Pfeifer, TU Wien/Austria, François Moriconi-Ebrard, Centre national de la recherche scientifique/France, Nathalie Gaussier, Université Montesquieu Bordeaux 4/France, Jochen Jaeger, Concordia University Montreal/Canada, and Bin Jiang, University of Gävle/Sweden.

    3 December 2019: pre-conference workshop

On 3 December the pre-conference workshop “Empirical results on the characteristics of urban sprawl” will take place The aim is to discuss empirical findings of urban sprawl from different regions of the world and to place them in the planning, legal, economic, and political context.

The ILUS 2019 is jointly organized by the following partners: Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER, Dresden), Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire des Energies de Demain (LIED, University of Paris Diderot), Pôle Image (University of Paris Diderot) and Institut National de l’Information Géographique et Forestière (IGN, Saint-Mandé).

    Call for Abstracts

Suggested topics for English-language presentations can be submitted at the latest by 29 March 2019. Early-stage researchers are encouraged to contribute. Selected post-conference full papers will be eligible for submission to selected special issues. The detailed call for abstracts is published on the symposium website: http://ilus2019.ioer.info/call-for-abstracts.

    About ILUS

The biennial International Land Use Symposium brings together leading academics in the fields of GIScience and spatial planning. Objective of the interdisciplinary conference is to advance the understanding of built-up areas and to develop new ideas for the sustainable use of the precious resource soil. ILUS brings together leading academics and interested attendees for presentation, discussion, and collaborative networking in the fields of spatial sciences, environmental studies, geography, cartography, GIScience, urban planning, architecture, which relate to investigations of settlements and infrastructure. Main organizer is the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER).
