Libori Summer School 2019: Prize awarded in honor of a woman philosopher at Paderborn University

Jennifer Strube Stabsstelle Presse und Kommunikation
Universität Paderborn

During the third international Libori Summer School, the Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize that honors scholars whose work best acknowledges the contributions of women to the history of philosophy was awarded by the ”Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists” and its director, Prof. Ruth Hagengruber, at Paderborn University. The award that includes prize money of 3,500 Euro is donated by Prof. Ulrike Detmers, spokeswoman of the Mestemacher Group and professor at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences.

”This prize is the first in Europe that honors a woman philosopher. It will be awarded every year to acknowledge an internationally renowned philosopher”, explains Ruth Hagengruber. This year’s laureate of the international award is Prof. Dr. em. Mary Ellen Waithe, Cleveland State University, who is regarded as the founder of the research area “History of Women Philosophers”. Prof. Waithe accepted her award live via Skype during the closing ceremony of the Libori Summer School: ”It means a lot to me to be honored in this way“, said the laureate. Prof. Dr. Sarah Hutton, member of the Award Committee of the Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize 2019, emphasized her pioneer work for the recognition of women philosophers.

    New cooperations announced

Stefan Schwan, Head of the International Office at Paderborn University, was glad to announce the new cooperations of the Center HWPS during the ceremony. The “Encyclopedia for Concise Concepts by Women Philosophers“ (ECC) that Ruth Hagengruber and Mary Ellen Waithe launched last year is going to be extended with a Portuguese version in cooperation with the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). The ECC consists of articles by renowned scholars that define important concepts by women philosophers and encourage further research. Moreover, the exchange programs with King’s University College in Canada and Bar-Ilan-University in Israel were introduced.

    Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize

The Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize is awarded to an outstanding contemporary philosopher in honor of Elisabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680). Elisabeth of Bohemia was the eldest daughter of Prince Friedrich V. of the Palatinate and his wife Elisabeth Stuart, a granddaughter of Maria Stuart. In her time Elisabeth of Bohemia was also a well-known European intellectual and pupil of Descartes. The prize was first awarded in 2018 to the Canadian philosopher Lisa Shapiro, Simon Fraser University.
