University of the Future: A Collaboration of Berlin International & Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory

Damla Akgül Pressestelle
Berlin International University of Applied Sciences

In a groundbreaking collaboration with Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory, students from the Berlin International University of Applied Sciences Faculty of Architecture and Design have embarked on a transformative journey to redefine the future of university spaces. The exhibition, titled "University of the Future," showcases visionary ideas and experimental projects that explore the evolving identity of higher education through conceptual architecture and design.

Exploring Knowledge Spaces: A Winter Semester's Dedication

Dedicating this winter semester's interdisciplinary project to the theme of Knowledge Spaces, students from diverse disciplines collaborated in teams to envision the future of university environments. The culmination of their efforts took place in a five-day intensive workshop at the Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory, where multi-format installations brought their conceptual designs to life.

The Heart of the Exhibition: Examining the Interplay

The six projects featured in the exhibition delve into the interplay between physical spaces and the evolving identity of universities. Set against the backdrop of the former Textile Dyeing Factory from 1925 in Meyerbeerstr, Weißensee, these projects explore the multifaceted changes in the physical layout, design, and utilization of spaces within university environments. The students investigate how these alterations intersect with the redefinition of institutional identity and its pivotal role in shaping the educational experience.

A Glimpse into the Background: Transformations in Higher Education

In the context of a changing landscape in higher education, where the pandemic and technological advancements have reshaped student expectations and access to knowledge, Berlin International University stands at the forefront. Established in 2014 as the youngest and only English-language school of architecture and design in Berlin, the institution prides itself on critical reflection, close supervision, and practical learning.

Meet the Visionaries: Faculty and Student Collaboration

Supervised by Prof. Karsten Huneck, Prof. Katharina Lemke, and Heike Brandt, and supported by Prof. Yüksel Pögün-Zander, PhD, the 5th-semester students from Bachelor programs in Architecture, Graphic Design, and Visual Communication, as well as Interior Architecture/Interior Design, have broken down disciplinary barriers to create groundbreaking projects that challenge the traditional notions of university spaces.

The "University of the Future" exhibition not only presents a glimpse into conceptual architecture and design but also signals a shift in the way we perceive and interact with the spaces that shape our educational journeys.
