Publication of open access book on identifying antisemitism on the Internet
As part of the “Decoding Antisemitism” research project, an interdisciplinary research team has developed the first comprehensive guide to identifying antisemitism online. The work examines both explicit and implicit antisemitism and offers valuable approaches for distinguishing gray areas in online communication.
The work is written in English and is the result of several years of analysis of tens of thousands of authentic comments posted by social media users in the UK, France, Germany, and beyond. Linguistic, discourse-analytical, and image-based methods were used to identify and categorize more than 40 antisemitic concepts and speech acts. The concepts include stereotypes, among them notions of Jewish power and conspiracy myths, post-1945 anti-Jewish concepts, and Israel-related antisemitism.
Intended for a broad readership
Each chapter contains a historical introduction to one of the antisemitic concepts, describes its central identifying features, and uses authentic examples from the Internet to illustrate the linguistic and visual means used to disseminate the corresponding ideas. Problematic statements that belong to a gray area and defy clear classification are also addressed.
The work is aimed at a broad readership, including researchers, decision-makers, content moderators, teachers, tech companies, and influencers. It provides a sound basis for better recognizing antisemitic statements and acting prudently in controversial situations – particularly in light of today's heated culture of debate. In this way, the work helps to move beyond entrenched patterns and promote better understanding in this highly sensitive area.
New standard work
In addition to antisemitism research, the work offers a methodological framework that can also be applied to communication patterns in other ideologies of hate such as misogyny, racism, and anti-Muslim discrimination.
Decoding Antisemitism is now available to experts and interested members of the public and makes a significant contribution to researching and combating antisemitism in digital spaces.
