Das vielleicht auffälligste astronomische Ereignis des Jahres 2004 wird wohl der Venusdurchgang am 8. Juni sein. Dabei ist das Vorüberziehen des Planeten Venus vor der Sonnenscheibe zu beobachten. Bemerkenswert ist die außerordentliche Seltenheit dieses Ereignisses. Der letzte Venusdurchgang fand im Jahre 1882 statt. Für Dresden wird sich das nächste Mal erst im Jahr 2247 die Gelegenheit bieten, das gesamte Ereignis in voller Länge zu verfolgen.
Die Mitarbeiter um Professor Michael Soffel haben dafür mehrere Beobachtungsinstrumente vorbereitet und erwarten die Besucher bei sonnigem Wetter auf der Beobachtungsplattform des Beyer-Baus (3. Etage).
