Der weltweit beobachtete Rückgang der Gebirgsgletscher führt zu einer drastischen Zunahme von Gletscherseen, die von teils instabilen Moränen begrenzt werden. Eine weitere Schwächung, etwa durch fortschreitendes Schmelzen, der oft eisgefüllten Moränen kann zu katastrophalen Seeausbrüchen führen. Die damit einhergehenden Flutwellen stellen in vielen Gebieten der Anden und des Himalaya eine ernsthafte Bedrohung von Bevölkerung und Infrastruktur dar. Neben dieser Form glazialer Seen und ihrem Gefahrenpotential werden in dem Vortrag auch eine Reihe anderer Erscheinungsformen des Zusammenspiels von Gletschereis und Seebildung vorgestellt, welche teilweise durchaus auch ein positives Potential für Energiegewinnung und Wasserverfügbarkeit besitzen.
