Durch den "Konstruktionspreis Helmut Dautel" sollen die Studierenden und die Öffentlichkeit auf die Bedeutung der Entwicklungstätigkeit und auf die vom Gestalten und Konstruieren ausgehende Faszination aufmerksam gemacht werden. Die Studierenden sollen angeregt werden, sich in Ihrem Studium intensiv mit der Konstruktion und den dazu vorhandenen Hilfsmitteln auseinanderzusetzen.
