Mehr als 45 Industrieunternehmen und Forschungseinrichtungen aus ganz Europa schließen sich in diesem Forum zusammen, um die Grundlagen der weltweiten Kommunikationsinfrastruktur Internet gemeinsam neu zu gestalten. Nur durch einen radikalen Paradigmenwechsel hin zu selbst-organisierenden, selbst-steuernden und selbst-schützenden, eben autonomen Netzen kann, so die These der Initiative, auf die immens wachsenden Anforderungen an das Internet adäquat reagiert werden. Europa hat die Kapazitäten und das Knowhow, diese Herausforderung anzunehmen und internationale Maßstäbe zu setzen.
Das Forum ist verbunden mit dem neuen Schwerpunkt "Situated and Autonomic Communications", der von der Abteilung "Future and Emerging Technologies" im Rahmen des IST (Information Society Technologies) Forschungsprogramms der Europäischen Kommission organisiert wird.
