Die "International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling" wurde 2001 in Hamburg gegründet. Sie ist eine gemeinsame Initiative des Max-Planck-Instituts für Meteorologie (MPI-M) und der Universität Hamburg. Beteiligte Einrichtungen sind das Institut für Küstenforschung des GKSS Forschungszentrums, das Hamburgische Welt-Wirtschafts-Archiv (HWWA), das Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK), das Max-Planck-Institut für Biogeochemie in Jena und das Wissenschaftliche Zentrum für Umweltsystemforschung an der Universität Gesamthochschule Kassel. Die IMPRS on Earth System Modelling wird von der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. und der ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius gefördert.
Die während der ersten Bewilligungsphase von 2001 bis 2008 erzielten Erfolge werden am 21. April 2005 im Zentrum für Marine und Atmosphärische Wissenschaften (ZMAW) einer internationalen und interdisziplinären wissenschaftlichen Kommission zur Bearbeitung vorgestellt. Vier Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen präsentieren ihre Forschungsergebnisse.
