esmt's First Forum on Responsible Leadership and Sustainable Futures

Metrics for Sustainable Performance

Presentation of the research findings of esmt's research project:
Responsible Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility -
Metrics for Sustainable Performance in Germany

Society is demanding that business and industry behave responsibly by increasing share holder value while adopting and implementing ethical codes of conduct, protecting the environment, and contributing to build a sustainable society where all stakeholders benefit from the activities, products and services generated by the business sector. Accordingly, many companies have accepted the challenge to transform their corporate philosophy and actions into sustainable businesses and institutions. A key question on this process is how to measure the progress the Firm is making in its path to sustainability.

About the Research Project
The project on Metrics for sustainability performance is part of the research agenda of esmt's Center for Responsible Leadership and Sustainable Futures which concentrates its efforts on examining the continuous tensions between managerial short-term pressures versus long-term performance and sustainable results within the context of business systems. The activities of this Center attempt to raise awareness of questions of long-term sustainability for companies and the wider contexts in which they operate.
The research findings to be presented at our Forum include:

A comparative analysis of the role of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability initiatives.

Identification of the factors that determine responsible leadership within a company (including internal and external factors, barriers and challenges and critical success factors).

An analysis of the methods utilized by twenty major German companies from six industry sectors including: Financial, information, energy, transportation, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical industry sectors.

Selection of six "Best in Class" German companies for more detailed analysis of their sustainability initiatives, and analysis of the Critical success factors for putting sustainability into practice.

esmt Forum on Metrics for Sustainable Performance will provide the opportunity to carry out challenging discussions with representatives of German companies as well as from other interested stakeholder groups including non governmental organizations, government authorities and academics. We like to take this opportunity to invite you to accompany us on 16th June at esmt campus in Munich. The executive summary of our research findings as well as the detailed program and access information to our Munich campus will be made available to you in the near future.
