Professor Richard A. Easterlin: Life Cycle Happiness and Its Sources - Why Psychology and Economics Need Each Other

ZUMA Kolloquium - 11. Oktober 2005

Professor Richard A. Easterlin, University of Southern California, Los Angeles

"Life Cycle Happiness and Its Sources - Why Psychology and Economics Need Each Other "

If one maintains an intact marriage and good health into old age he or she will probably be happier than at age 20 - the pure effect of aging dominates the trend in happi-ness. But for the average person changing life circumstances override the effect of aging - happiness rises slightly to midlife and then de¬clines.

This analysis supports a "bottom-up" theory of life cycle happiness. It supports neither an economic model in which happiness depends only on objective conditions nor the strong setpoint model of psychology in which ob¬jective conditions have a negligible effect. Rather, it points to the need for collaborative work between psychologists and economists on models encompassing both external conditions and internal psychological processes.
