ZUMA-Kolloquium: Assessing Mode Effects in Survey Items with Ordinal Response Categories

Referent: Prof. Allan L. McCutcheon, Ph.D., Director Gallup Research Center

Titel: Assessing Mode Effects in Survey Items with Ordinal Response Categories

Abstract:
The mounting cost of conducting surveys is leading to increased pressure
to explore alternative modes of data collection. Many survey
methodologists, however, are concerned with the consequences of such mode
shifts for interpreting survey trends--the change of mode may lead to
differences in the distribution of survey responses; social desirability
and extreme response styles are two of the better documented differences
that are consequences related to mode effects.

This presentation focuses on the use of the latent class model to identify
mode-induced differences in response patterns for survey questions with
ordered response categories in crossover designs. Crossover designs are
experimental designs in which each subject is exposed to two (or more)
stimuli--in this instance, questions using different data collection mode.
Using data from a joint Gallup-Europe/European Social Survey experiment,
the presentation extends the initial work by Saris and Hagenaars (1997) to
explore a range of latent class models for crossover design survey data
using two or more modes of data collection. These models provide a number
of specific advantages to the usual methods employed in the analysis of
survey mode effect data.

Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
